Let's talk about Rose Byrne. Forever it would seem, the Australian actress has toiled in lesser roles in not-so-great movies. The handmaiden to Natalie Portman in “Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.” A courageous zombie-battling officer in “28 Days Later.” A decadent pop singer in “Get Him to the Greek.”
Minor roles, really, but you couldn't miss Byrne, with her sad eyes and knack for harnessing drama — or hilarity, in the case of “Greek.”
Things really took off for Byrne in 2007 with TV's “Damages,” a little-noticed, but spectacularly tense, legal drama in which Byrne played a smart but inexperienced attorney working with a smarter, morally compromised legal ace played by Glenn Close. Byrne held her own in scenes with a great veteran actress, and so born was my obsession.
Now, finally, Byrne is getting the attention — and the roles — she deserves. She's the straight-laced friend in the hit comedy “Bridesmaids,” and she'll play a prominent role as Moira MacTaggert in the surefire blockbuster “X-Men: First Class.”
Finally, mass audiences will get to see Byrne act — and then they'll be obsessed, too.
